Manga publishers explore legal action against one of the internet’s best piracy sites

It’s good to be a manga reader these days. The medium is one of the biggest selling in stores right now, and there are more titles making their way from Japan to fans than ever before. It’s hard to fathom the industry’s growth, but it has come at a price. As always, manga piracy is rampant, and two publishers are now considering legal action against one of the biggest piracy sites on the internet.

The information comes from a district court in California where a one-sided request was disclosed TorrentFreak. The site has learned that the legal teams at Shueisha and Viz Media are seeking an order that would allow them to obtain “document and data for use in foreign legal proceedings.”

The application goes to name the services that the legal case is looking for. One of them is Manganelo where the site is reported to receive 24 million visits every month. The other site listed is on another level of traffic when it comes to users. Shueisha and Viz Media are seeking information about Manganato which fetched over 180 million hits in March 2022. This is more traffic than The Pirate Bay and Fmovies combined even though these two sites are heavily traded by pirates.

Depending on the application, a variety of information is searched for by said legal teams, and their files consist of hundreds of pages so far. At the moment, there is no information on whether the publishers will bring civil or criminal action against the piracy sites. This latest investigation comes after Shueisha and other major manga publishers vowed to crack down on pirates globally, and a slew of high traffic services were brought to court in response.
